The Coastal Bend College Visual Arts department is excited to announce the “Elizabeth Payne: People and Places” exhibit inside the Simon Michael Art Gallery of the Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building. Payne will be showcasing 53 paintings of portraits and images from New York, California, and Texas. The exhibit will premiere on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 with a reception at10:30 a.m., and a gallery talk at 1:30 p.m. that is open to the general public.

Payne received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, California, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College in New York, New York. Her art career spans many decades, and her work has been featured in many museum exhibits across the country such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Phoenix Gallery in San Francisco, and the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi.

She also has a large portfolio of work inspired by the cities she’s lived in. During her time living in New York City, Payne stopped painting abstractions and started a series of paintings titled “The Four Seasons.” The paintings reflected the various changes in the seasons from the windows of her New York City apartment. Now as a Texas resident, she’s using local scenery and sites as her inspiration for her current artwork.

“My work again deals with places and objects nearby: an abandoned house, a bathtub in a field, the local cemetery, the Guadalupe River, the San Antonio River and other sites,” Payne explained.

Everyone is welcome to view this free exhibit from October 24 through November 20, 2012. For more information, contact Jayne Duryea, at (361) 354-2322 or duryeaj@coastalbend.edu.
