CBC plans for state-of-the-art science labs at Beeville campus

Headline: CBC plans for state-of-the-art science labs at Beeville campus

BEEVILLE, TX— At the regular board meeting of the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Board of Trustees on Wednesday, April 15, the board moved to approve laboratory renovations for the anatomy and physiology (A&P) lab and science stock room on the Beeville campus.

The renovations will be funded by Project OASIS—a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) grant focusing on increasing the number of Hispanics and low-income students obtaining degrees in STEM fields.

The renovations to the A&P lab will enhance the delivery of instruction, encourage student interaction and strengthen overall learning outcomes. Instructional delivery in pre-requisite courses such as biology, A&P, chemistry and geology will improve thanks to the extra resources the grant provides. Renovations by VWR International are scheduled to take place from May 2015 to August 2015.

CBC’s Fine Arts Professor Jayne Duryea conducted a presentation on the various courses the fine arts department offers to students and the community. The arts department hosts various student and faculty art exhibitions in the Simon Michael Gallery, in addition to hosting glass, china painting and printmaking workshops.

In fall 2015, art students will have the opportunity to participate in Sculpture I, a new addition to the art department’s course offerings. Students will learn how to manipulate plaster, clay and wood for three-dimensional (3D) projects and coursework. They will also learn how to manipulate hot glass, as well as work with 3D printing equipment.

The Office of Dual Enrollment (ODE) added five Early College High Schools (ECHS) for the 2015-2016 school year. The newly acquired partnerships include Alice, Jim Hogg, Karnes City, Rivera and San Diego Independent School Districts (ISD). These five schools will join Kingsville and Mathis ISD in providing their high school students (grades 9-12) with opportunities to earn associate’s degrees while concurrently taking their high school courses.

The CBC Foundation will present The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the A.C. Jones High School Auditorium. This one time performance by the prestigious Corpus Ballet Company is part of the CBC Foundation’s 50 for 50 campaign to raise funds for CBC’s 50th anniversary. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the CBC Business Office, any Pantry store location and online at www.bit.ly/cbcwizard.

Heading: CBC Dental Hygiene Department hosts Free Sealant Day and Dental Examinations in celebration of National Children’s Dental Month

In observance of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Dental Hygiene program will conduct a free sealant day for youth 6-17 years of age. Free dental examinations for adults will also be conducted throughout the day.

CBC encourages all community members from Beeville and the surrounding areas to participate in this free event on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CBC Dental Hygiene Clinic.

Youth who require sealants, a preventative measure that acts as a barrier between the tooth and cavities, will receive them during their examination. The CBC Dental Hygiene Department will administer all services.

Dental examinations will include a review of the patient’s oral health history, a physical examination of the patient’s mouth, and a referral for dental treatment, if necessary.

A sign-in sheet will be provided the day of the event to ensure that all patients have an opportunity to be seen; no appointments will be accepted. All youth must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to receive services from the CBC Dental Hygiene Department.

If you are unable to attend this event, the CBC Dental Hygiene Program operates a clinic that conducts teeth cleanings for the general public in the clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays. Appointment times for both days are at 8:30 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Examinations and teeth cleaning are free for senior citizens over 65 years of age, faculty & staff, and active or retired military. Students receive services for $5 with a valid CBC ID and the general public receives services for $10. No additional charge is accumulated for multiple appointment patients, x-rays, or sealants.

The CBC Dental Hygiene Clinic is located in the James R. Dougherty, Jr. Building on the CBC Beeville campus located at 3800 Charco Rd in Beeville, Texas, 78102. Questions regarding sealant day, dental services or appointments should be directed to the CBC Dental Hygiene Department via telephone at (361) 354-2555.

CBC Industry Expo Eagle Ford Shale

Coastal Bend College prides itself on being a pioneer in providing quality education and training in the oil and gas industry for the Eagle Ford Shale region. On Thursday, July 19, 2012, Coastal Bend College will be hosting an Industry Expo at the Beeville campus on 3800 Charco Road from 2-5 p.m. for a full-spectrum demonstration of what the college has to offer employers, students and job seekers.

Prospective students can see first-hand the various programs and technology offered at Coastal Bend College that can put them to work in the Eagle Ford Shale. Program instructors will be available to answer questions and provide demonstrations about the following programs: Airframe and Powerplant, Automotive, Commercial Driving Licensure (CDL), Safety Training, Drafting and Design, Machinist, Oil and Gas Technology, Welding and a wide variety of office support from accounting and office management to computer programming and networking.

“The CBC faculty is excited to showcase the hands-on learning opportunities available to students. Here at CBC, we strongly believe these programs have the ability to change lives,” said Dr. Bruce Exstrom, Dean of Instructional Services for Coastal Bend College.

Students interested in CDL training can get behind the wheel of a cutting-edge simulator at the Industry Expo. The simulator is provided by Excel Driver Services, and is the same simulator used as a teaching aid for students enrolled in the CDL courses at all of the Coastal Bend College campuses. In addition to utilizing a simulator, students in CDL courses also log 1,500 miles of truck driving experience and 3,000 miles of observation time in the truck.

Financial aid, for those who qualify, is available for many of the programs that Coastal Bend College offers. In addition to federal student aid, funds are also available for qualified students under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)—especially for CDL courses.

“Workforce Solutions would like to continue our commitment to CDL driver training by offering an additional $50,000 for CDL training of WIA-eligible participants, to occur between July 1 and September 30, 2012,” said Larry Demieville, Deputy Director for Workforce Solutions. Those interested in obtaining more information about WIA benefits should contact their local Workforce Solutions center.

Glynis Strause, Dean of Institutional Advancement for Coastal Bend College, realizes that with the high demand for these occupations also comes the high demand for proper safety training and awareness.

“We are committed to meeting the safety training and awareness needs of local employers and companies to ensure their employees are well-trained before they get on the job,” Strause said.

Coastal Bend College offers employee safety training courses under its Customized and Continuing Education department. Terry Kirkpatrick, Certified Safety Instructor, teaches SafeLand, first-aid, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant courses at the CBC campus or even on-site throughout the Eagle Ford Shale region as needed. Employers and local companies that attend the Industry Expo will be able to see what customized training options CBC can provide to fit their needs.

The Coastal Bend College Industry Expo will kick-off at the James R. Dougherty Student Union Building (SUB), and has something to offer for anyone interested in this growing, dynamic field. Industry representatives from PEC Premier, Excel Driver Services and other local companies will be present to showcase the services they offer.
