Coastal Bend College to host powerlifting event

An intramural powerlifting competition will be held at Coastal Bend College in Beeville on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Weigh in starts at 8 a.m. The meet starts at 10:30 a.m. The competition will consist of a full powerlifting meet with the addition of a separate bench press competition at $15 for each event and/or $25 for both events. A participant may enter in one or both of the events. We will generally follow USAPL rules.

Taft High School artist earns ‘Best of Show’

Kati Pina of Taft High School earned Best of Show honors for her entry, "Katy Perry." Pina’s work was awarded first place for her entry, "Waitress" in the Drawing/Pencil category. Last year, Pina earned first place for her pencil drawing and first place for her colored drawing. Ten area high schools participated in the annual art competition. The award-winning student work is currently on display in the Simon Michael Art Gallery in Coastal Bend College’s Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building in Beeville. The show will run through March 11. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Area middle and high schools to participate in Dia Del Mariachi to be held April 16 in Alice

The 9th Annual Coastal Bend College Dia Del Mariachi™ Vocal and Group Competition, will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Alice High School, located at 1 Coyote Trail in Alice, Texas. The competition’s best overall elementary, middle and high school vocalists, and the best overall groups from Elementary/Middle School Division I and II, High School Division I and II, and Composite Groups will be showcased on stage prior to an evening concert featuring Mariachi Campanas de America. Kansas high school glass sculptor earns Best of Show

Alyssa Canfield, a Liberal High School (Liberal, Kan.) student, earned top honors for her glass entry “Purple Pendengo.” Her Best of Show piece was one of almost 80 entries into the annual juried high school art competition sponsored by Coastal Bend College. The award-winning student work is currently on display in the Simon Michael Art Gallery in Coastal Bend College’s Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building in Beeville. The show will run through March 10. South Texas school mariachis showcased during competition, concert

More than 850 middle and high school students converged at Alice High School to celebrate mariachi musicality last Saturday (April 17). Coastal Bend College’s 8th Annual Día Del Mariachi(TM) Vocal and Group Competition attracted middle school, junior varsity and varsity school competitors in many aspects of mariachi music. The judged event showcased the talents of 41 youth mariachis and 37 individual vocalist competitors.
