CBC Students Attend Community College Day at the Capitol

BEEVILLE–  Members of the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Student Government Association joined hundreds of community college students from across Texas for Community College Day at the Capitol on January 26, 2023. The biennial event, organized by the Texas Association of Community Colleges, provides a platform for community college students to interact with legislators and raise awareness about the critical role these institutions play in providing accessible education to students in Texas.

CBC students Corina Carrion, Stephanie Cantu-Trevino, and Kaitlyn Mattila joined CBC President Dr. Justin Hoggard and a delegation of faculty and staff for a morning rally at the steps of the Capitol before attending scheduled meetings with Senator Morgan LaMantia and Texas State Representative J.M. Lozano’s Chief of Staff, Matt Lamon.  Students then received a private tour of the House Chamber, learned about the timelines and tasks of the 88th legislative session, and networked with students from other attending community colleges.

“My experience at the Capitol is one that I won’t forget.” Carrion reflected, “Not only was I able to speak to Senator LaMantia about important issues in Texas, I was able to witness other people speak up about issues that they were passionate about as well.”

“It is essential for our students to have a voice in the legislative process and to be able to advocate for their educational needs,” said Dr. Hoggard. “We are proud of the representation our Student Government Association provided at Community College Day and the positive impact they will have on the future of community colleges in Texas.”
