CBC Offers Jim Wells and Duval Counties Residents Free Training in Select Allied Health Continuing Education Programs

Coastal Bend College offers free tuition for qualifying Jim Wells and Duval counties residents in Phlebotomy, Certified Nurse Assistant, and Emergency Medical Technician programs. Eligible students may also qualify for transportation.

Phlebotomy

Coastal Bend College is accepting applications for Phlebotomy Training that will be held at CBC Alice.

The first cohort will start June 4, 2022 and meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. through July 9, 2022 followed by clinicals.

The second cohort will start July 30, 2022 and meet on Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. through September 3, 2022 followed by clinicals.

No prior healthcare knowledge or experience is required to apply, but candidates are required to have a high school diploma or GED. Students will need to purchase a book, white scrubs, and rubber sole shoes. 

A phlebotomist is an integral part of the healthcare team and properly obtains blood specimens from patients of all ages, using venipuncture and capillary collection. Phlebotomists work in multiple healthcare environments such as inpatient and outpatient settings.

EMT

Coastal Bend College, in partnership with HALO-Flight EMS Academy, is offering an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course.

Applications are due by Wednesday, July 6.

The EMT course will begin on Monday, July 18. Classes will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Students in the EMT course will complete 210 classroom hours and practicum of 24 hours of hospital clinicals and at least 48 hours of ambulance clinicals.

Prerequisites for entry is a high school diploma or GED and a minimum age of 18 by the end of the course. A criminal background check will be required of all students. A current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS CPR is required prior to clinical internship. (An AHA class will be offered prior to the start of the course at the student’s expense.)
