CBC Re-Opening

Coastal Bend College Faculty, Staff, Students and Community:

All of us here at CBC recognize these uncertain times throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic and the need to transition back to Campus Work as we begin to prepare for the Fall Semester. I am extremely appreciative and impressed at how well our faculty and staff have adapted to continue to serve our students and community.

As the State of Texas continues its reopening phases, CBC has followed suite very carefully and strategically since May 4, which initiated Phase I.

  • Phase I was the return of the Deans and Directors; Business Office flex scheduling.
  • Phase II projected start date June 15 – expanded flex scheduling of some offices; open to the public by appointment; supervisors are preparing the offices the week of June 8-11; supervisors will contact employees who need to return June 15.
  • Phase III projected start date, July 6-20: We plan to be fully operational and “return to work” completed. There are still details to finalize and guidance is still forthcoming. Suffice to say, the dates for Phase III are tentative.
  • Phase IV will be details for the Fall 2020 semester.

In preparation to open to the Public, I assembled a Return to Campus Task Force to assess and plan on how best to open to the public. The Task Force has been working through various scenarios to revive the CBC Campus and resume normal operations.

With that said, we will begin Phase II – All CBC offices will be open to the Public by appointment beginning June 15 with limited staffing. We are still providing services remotely and continue to ask that method be utilized before coming to the location most beneficial to you. We continue to ask the public and respective students to utilize the numbers below as we have for the past two months. However, we recognize a need may arise and a visit to one of our locations may present the most expedient resolution.

On June 15 when we begin our soft opening and serving the public by appointments, we ask that all visitors continue to wear face coverings and respect social distancing. We acknowledge this is not as desirable as “normal operations”; however, we are asking everyone to assist the CBC staff in providing a healthy and safe environment for our staff, students, and patrons. Office spaces will have limited occupancy, and other services, such as the library, will limit the number of patrons we serve at any given time.

I am hopeful that we will have normal operations restored sometime in July. As we move forward and prepare for the fall, I will be meeting with the deans and faculty leadership to have our fall plans ready to roll out this summer. I am cautiously optimistic that we will have some face to face interaction in the classroom. Another consideration may be a hybrid approach. As more guidance becomes available and the state of Texas continues to reopen, we will ensure that we can move forward in a safe and healthy environment.
