The “Simon Michael, Painter, Teacher, and Philosopher” exhibit will display 60 works of Simon Michael. The exhibit will open on Wednesday, September 4 at 12:30 p.m. with a reception and gallery talk. The exhibit will close on October 10, 2019.
Simon Michael is often considered the grandfather of the Rockport Art Community and his influence was not restricted to art, as people knew his influence as a teacher and philosopher. The personality and paintings of Michael have been credited with driving the creative and artistic waking of the Coastal Bend.
Michael arrived in Rockport in 1948 and opened the Simon Michael School of Fine Art in 1950. At the beginning of his teaching in Rockport and surrounding towns, Michael would offer lessons for $1 a day.
In 1982, the Simon Michael Art Gallery located at the Coastal Bend College Beeville Campus was dedicated in honor of Simon Michael, a South Texas artist and retired art instructor of CBC. The Simon Michael Art Gallery in the Frank Jostes Visual Arts Building provides opportunities for students and the community to view the work of professional and student artists.
The Art Center of Corpus Christi also has a Simon Michael Art Gallery and in 1988, there was a book written by Dorothy Kucera titled Simon Michael: The Man, The Artist, The Teacher.
Before Simon Michael made his way to the Coastal Bend, he spent time painting with Picasso in Paris and working on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
The last works of Simon Michael will be auctioned off with the proceeds split between the CBC Simon Michael Art Gallery and the Rockport Art Center.
For more information on the auction, please contact Jayne Duryea, CBC Professor of Arts at firstname.lastname@example.org
