PLEASANTON, TX—The Coastal Bend College Foundation recently received a $5,000 grant from the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio (BHFSA). The grant will provide scholarships and support to students enrolled in the certified nursing assistant (CNA) program at the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Pleasanton site during the 2016-2017 academic year.

“CBC’s CNA program is a wonderful way for people to get their careers started in the health care profession,” said CBC Dean of Workforce and Pleasanton Site Director Julia Garcia

Scholarships will be awarded to students whose permanent residence is in the BHFSA eight county service area and whose intent, following certification, is to remain and seek employment in the BHFSA’s eight county service area.

The Coastal Bend College Foundation applied for the grant in response to the expected population growth and health provider shortage area status for Atascosa County.

CBC Foundation Development and Program Manager Elizabeth Wilbanks stated that the Foundation applied for the grant in response to the high demand in the Atascosa County region for quality healthcare professionals.

“Hopefully this opportunity will encourage more students to enroll who otherwise would not be able to afford the program. It’s an honor for the CBC Foundation to play a role in helping educate the next generation of nurses,” Wilbanks said.

CBC’s CNA program in Pleasanton is about a semester long and accepts 15 students per cohort. Students interested in more information can contact Cora Sain, allied health administrative support specialist, at (361) 354-2732 or via email at csain@coastalbend.edu.
