The AWS Certification Department gave its first certification exam in October 1976. The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) was the first industry-recognized certification that ensured high quality workmanship in welding. The success and prestige of this certification opened the doors for AWS to develop several more certifications benefiting the industry.
In the Coastal Bend region, skilled welders are in demand due to the robust economy and workforce demands brought forth through the Eagle Ford Shale. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, welders make an average of $17.66 to $19.67 per hour with a one-year certificate in the Coastal Bend and surrounding areas.
AWS offers over 10 different professional welding certifications, with more than 47,000 certified. To view the 2016 certification seminar schedule visit, www.aws.org/certification.
