Headline: CBC plans for state-of-the-art science labs at Beeville campus
BEEVILLE, TX— At the regular board meeting of the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Board of Trustees on Wednesday, April 15, the board moved to approve laboratory renovations for the anatomy and physiology (A&P) lab and science stock room on the Beeville campus.
The renovations will be funded by Project OASIS—a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) grant focusing on increasing the number of Hispanics and low-income students obtaining degrees in STEM fields.
The renovations to the A&P lab will enhance the delivery of instruction, encourage student interaction and strengthen overall learning outcomes. Instructional delivery in pre-requisite courses such as biology, A&P, chemistry and geology will improve thanks to the extra resources the grant provides. Renovations by VWR International are scheduled to take place from May 2015 to August 2015.
CBC’s Fine Arts Professor Jayne Duryea conducted a presentation on the various courses the fine arts department offers to students and the community. The arts department hosts various student and faculty art exhibitions in the Simon Michael Gallery, in addition to hosting glass, china painting and printmaking workshops.
In fall 2015, art students will have the opportunity to participate in Sculpture I, a new addition to the art department’s course offerings. Students will learn how to manipulate plaster, clay and wood for three-dimensional (3D) projects and coursework. They will also learn how to manipulate hot glass, as well as work with 3D printing equipment.
The Office of Dual Enrollment (ODE) added five Early College High Schools (ECHS) for the 2015-2016 school year. The newly acquired partnerships include Alice, Jim Hogg, Karnes City, Rivera and San Diego Independent School Districts (ISD). These five schools will join Kingsville and Mathis ISD in providing their high school students (grades 9-12) with opportunities to earn associate’s degrees while concurrently taking their high school courses.
The CBC Foundation will present The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the A.C. Jones High School Auditorium. This one time performance by the prestigious Corpus Ballet Company is part of the CBC Foundation’s 50 for 50 campaign to raise funds for CBC’s 50th anniversary. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the CBC Business Office, any Pantry store location and online at www.bit.ly/cbcwizard.
