The TRiO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program located at the Coastal Bend College (CBC) Alice site hosted TRiO Day, an annual nationwide celebration, on Jan. 30th. ETS conducted concurrent breakout sessions for high school students in attendance that focused on dual credit programs, college readiness, financial literacy and career programs offered at CBC.

Larry Martinez, the Mayor of Alice, was present to welcome TRiO Day participants and presenters to the Alice site. Martinez provided the TRiO program with a proclamation from the mayor’s office proclaiming January 30, 2015 as TRiO Day in the city of Alice. The proclamation stressed the importance of the ETS program’s continued commitment to high school students in the Alice community and surrounding area.

Each year the ETS counselors recognize two students, out of the 494 students, who are currently in the program with the TRiO Outstanding Student award. This award recognizes students who exhibit commitment and enthusiasm for the TRiO program.

Ruben Martinez, a junior at Premont High School, and Christopher Herren, a senior at Alice High School, were each awarded the TRiO Outstanding Student Award. Both students excel in their coursework, participate in off campus activities and meet with their ETS counselors on a regular basis.

“Ruben and Christopher are role models for others who are in the ETS program,” said Educational Talent Search Director Josie Schuenemann. “They willingly and enthusiastically participate in the program, they are always engaged with us, or they are seeking us out to inquire or ask questions. I’m happy that we were able to honor them with the TRiO Outstanding Student award for their hard work and commitment to the CBC Alice ETS program.”
