Upward Bound recruiting students for academic year

Upward Bound is recruiting for the 2014-2015 school year.  Located at Coastal Bend College (CBC) in Beeville as part of TRiO outreach services, Upward Bound (UB) is a college preparatory program that affords high school students the chance to participate in numerous educational activities and field trips, take dual credit classes, and receive the tutoring assistance they may need to succeed academically.  Testing will be held October 11 at 9:00 am at CBC.

The program meets on Saturdays throughout the school year for instructional days, educational outings, and community service opportunities.  Past trips have included Broadway productions and beach cleanup days at the National Seashore.  Instructional days at CBC include tutoring, as well as a specifically designed courses geared to promote academic success in both high school and college.  Academic advisors also visit students at their respective schools to offer one-on-one guidance.

During the summer, students participate in a six-week long stay at the dorms, which provides them with a taste of college life and the chance to excel at college credit courses.  The summer closes with an exciting end of year trip, featuring visits to museums and art galleries.

As part of a federally funded grant, participation in UB is at no cost to the student or their families.  Students must meet the following eligibility requirements: must be low-income and/or potential first-generation college student, be at least 13 years old, and be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States.

Students attending public school in Beeville, Mathis, Pettus, or Skidmore-Tynan may apply for UB.  UB’s sister program, GOST, services the George West, Odem, Sinton, and Taft schools.
