Beeville, TX— Coastal Bend College (CBC) and Angel Care Emergency Medical Service (EMS) are partnering together to offer an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Course this fall. In the Coastal Bend region, EMT’s earn about $33,450 annually, which is the equivalent of earning about $16 per hour according to 2013 data available from the United States Department of Labor. Furthermore, the EMT occupation is expected to grow 22% by the year 2022 due to the increased demand for healthcare support professionals in this area.

The EMT Basic Course will begin on October 14, 2014 and end on February 26, 2015. Classes are held primarily on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with occasional Saturday classes. Students in the EMT Basic Course will participate in 240 hours of course instruction, 24 clinical hours at a hospital, and 24 hours of observation time in an ambulance with Angel Care EMS.

“This partnership is wonderful for Beeville and the surrounding areas because we’re helping provide workforce training options that lead to well-paying careers in high demand occupations. The course is designed to be a hands-on, immersive learning experience. After the student finishes the four-month course, they can embark on a rewarding career that can help save lives,” said Susie Gaitan, CBC Allied Health Coordinator.

The course costs $800 and will be taught by Jennifer Baron and Gabriel Aleman from Angel Care EMS. Prospective students may enroll now by contacting Susie Gaitan at (361) 354-2549 or via email at mgaitan@coastalbend.edu. The course is limited to 20 students, and veterans may utilize Hazlewood benefits to enroll in the course. Veterans seeking more information about utilizing their benefits should contact Rosie Streicher, CBC Veterans Affairs Specialist, at (361) 354-2421 or via email at rstreich@coastalbend.edu.
