CBC spring 2013 enrollment decreases

During the January 17, 2013 regular board meeting, the Coastal Bend College Board of Trustees discussed spring 2013 enrollment, the amended 2012-2013 CBC Course Catalog, and a new faculty title system.

Over 3500 students are enrolled at CBC for the spring 2013 semester, and while enrollment is down overall from spring 2012, CBC has seen an increase in students enrolled in Internet courses. With many online course options to choose from, students are seeing value and convenience in being able to take CBC courses off campus from any computer. Furthermore, CBC offers many of the same on campus services and resources to Internet students, and that helps students feel confident about taking online courses.

Due to the decrease in student enrollment, the college will find ways to remain fiscally conservative for the remainder of the academic year, but is always committed to maintaining a high quality level of education, services, and resources for all students.

“The faculty and staff want to be part of the solution, and everyone at CBC is coming together to find ways to manage expenses and be responsible. Student success and services will not be sacrificed,” said Dr. Beatriz T. Espinoza, CBC President.

An amended version of the 2012-2013 CBC Course Catalog has been released and is available online at www.coastalbend.edu/publications or at any CBC campus. Some of the information that was updated includes course descriptions, organizational charts, and directory information. The 2013-2014 CBC Course Catalog will be available in late spring to coincide with the opening of fall 2013 registration.

A new faculty title system has been implemented to better align with higher education community college standards. Faculty members at CBC will be classified as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor based on years of service. The new faculty title system goes into effect immediately.

The Board approved to employ Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP from Austin, Texas to represent CBC on the possible acquisition of the Kingsville campus. The firm assisted Austin Community College in purchasing the Highland Mall in Austin, Texas, and specializes in real estate matters involving government/public agencies. A decision on whether to purchase or continue leasing the CBC Kingsville campus will be made by the Board at the February 2013 meeting.

CBC and the Beeville Independent School District (BISD) met to discuss the possibility of partnering together to renovate and upgrade the Joe Hunter Field. The field is utilized by both the college and BISD for softball and baseball games throughout the year, and both parties will meet in February to discuss the matter further.
