Beginning fall 2012, students will be able to earn their Associate of Arts degree while only attending classes every-other-weekend at the Beeville or Alice Coastal Bend College campuses. The Weekend College is part of Project OASIS, which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) grant focusing on increasing the number of Hispanics and low income students obtaining degrees in STEM fields.
Registration is open for the Weekend College at the Beeville and Alice campuses, and students wishing to enroll can see any Coastal Bend College advisor to register. “The weekend college is structured so that students can focus on one class at a time rather than trying to juggle and balance four classes,” says Danny Garcia, Weekend College Coordinator. Students who enroll in the program will be assigned a case manager to assist them with financial aid questions, tutoring services and general academic advising.
Classes will be held every-other-weekend on Fridays from 6-10 pm, Saturdays from 8-12 pm and 1-5 pm, and Sunday from 8 am-12 pm. The average class size will be about 25 students, and there is financial aid available to those who qualify.
While only the Beeville and Alice campuses are participating in Weekend College this academic year, both Kingsville and Pleasanton will be offering the Weekend College in the fall of 2013.
Garcia also adds, “The flexible schedule of the program is perfect for students with full-time jobs and family obligations preventing them from attending during the week.”
