Coastal Bend College Board of Trustees authorizes ‘zero tuition’ for community program, professional development courses

Coastal Bend College Board of Trustees recently approved zero tuition for a volunteer tax prep course held in Kingsville. Participants, part of the IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Program, will provide free tax assistance to qualifying filers in Kingsville. The program, sponsored by Kingsville Federal Credit Union, will offer community assistance with tax returns, including special credits such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

Participants, part of the IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Program, will provide free tax assistance to qualifying filers in Kingsville. The program, sponsored by Kingsville Federal Credit Union, will offer community assistance with tax returns, including special credits such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC), Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

The Board is required, according to the Guide for Instructional Programs in Workforce Education (GIPWE) to approve tuition for all classes, even when tuition is set at $0. The board also approved zero tuition for the following continuing education courses:

EDTC 2000: A professional development course offered by St. Mary’s Charter School in Beeville for educators. St. Mary’s will provide the curriculum and instructor for the course. CBC has approved the instructor as qualified to teach the course.

The same course will be offered by Beeville Independent School District for educators in the ACE Program. RBTC 1091: A course in robotics will also be offered to BISD educators in the ACE Program.

The 21st Century Program, also known as Texas After School Centers on Education (ACE), is available to Beeville ISD high school students to obtain job skills and college credit. College tuition, fees and the cost of books are covered for students in the program and they are transported to and from the high school to attend classes on the college campus.
